Türkiye and Syria have taken the first step toward comprehensive cooperation in the energy sector. Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, met with Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed Al-Bashir in Damascus to sign a memorandum of understanding covering energy, mining, and hydrocarbons between the two countries.
Under the agreement, Türkiye is preparing to export 1,000 megawatts of electricity and 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Syria. Bayraktar emphasized that access to energy plays a key role in Syria’s recovery and stated that they are ready to invest in projects through public, private, and international partnerships.
Electricity Exports to Triple
According to the agreement, Türkiye will triple its current electricity exports and send 1,000 megawatts of power to Syria in the short term. Natural gas will be supplied primarily to the Aleppo and Homs regions, enabling an additional 1,200–1,300 megawatts of electricity generation in these areas.
Electricity Supply to Reach Half of the Day
Thanks to these projects, the electricity supply in Syria, which currently lasts only a few hours per day, is expected to increase to cover up to half of the day. To ensure sustainable electricity production, gas supply to natural gas-fired power plants will be accelerated.
Investment and Development-Focused Cooperation
Highlighting that international companies are starting to return to Syria with expanding investment and financing opportunities, the Turkish side expressed openness to cooperation in energy, mining, and infrastructure projects. The focus will be on discovering new resources, increasing production capacity, and utilizing the resulting economic value for reconstruction efforts.
Gas Pipeline to Become Operational in June
Syrian Energy Minister Al-Bashir announced that the natural gas pipeline from Türkiye will be activated in June. He added that Turkish companies will contribute to Syria not only in electricity but also in mining, and that technical teams will be established to carry out infrastructure works between the two countries.
Presidential-Level Contact
During his visit to Damascus, Minister Bayraktar also met with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Jarrah. The discussions evaluated ongoing projects in energy and mining and brought new cooperation opportunities to the table.
A New Era: Strategic Partnership
The signed framework agreement plans joint work across many areas, including electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and trade; energy efficiency; hydrocarbon resources; as well as the exploration of rare earth elements and critical minerals. This step marks the beginning of a new era of energy and mining cooperation between Türkiye and Syria.
